Uhura

Next up in the Enterprise crew is Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols. Only two more to go now.

The likeness still isn’t perfect. I’m starting to think about this seeming loss of form and have come up with three possible reasons for it:

• Maybe two layer portraits just don’t work. One layer worked great for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and for The Blues Brothers Band but I’m struggling so much with two layers.
• Maybe my Studio’s like Samson’s hair or Billy’s Boots. Take it away from me and make me work in the house and I lose all my skills.
• Or maybe it’s because I’m starting from grids but then working by eye within the grids, rather than using a ruler to accurately pinpoint key reference points on the face. This feels more like it could be the reason. If it is, it’s why these have a common feel to them. And it’s also good for my development as an artist to start relying less on the ruler.
