Somewhere I Can Walk Alone

So, after that disaster, I thought I’d have another go at the same simple scene in Queendown Warren. This time, my intentions were to only use two colours, French ultramarine and burnt sienna, and to leave some white, snowy areas. White gouache came off the bench to play a role at the end.

Once again, I worked in the order sky, background, foreground, middleground trees. Using only two colours made muddy overworking less of a risk. The areas that I left white contrasted too much with other colours, so I dragged watery colours over them. At times my snowy areas started looking too dark, So I went over them with white gouache and tried to blend away the edges of the resulting white areas. I also added some white snowy clumps to the trees. I tried to contrast the trees against the foreground everywhere, with value differences in some places and colour differences in others. And in the foreground I’ve again used a Terry Harrison brush to create grassy textures.

And that’s all I have to say about the process for this one. This painting is much better than the last one. The colours work well together, creating a cold feeling painting that nevertheless includes lots of temperature contrasts. It’s up for sale, with the price to be found here.
