Jim Lovell

Next up is Jim Lovell, Command Module Pilot (CMP) in Apollo 8 and, more famously, Commander of Apollo 13, the famously aborted moon landing mission of 1970. There was an explosion in the service module on the way to the moon causing the mission to be abandoned but, with the mission having made it past the point at which the moon’s gravitational pull was greater than the Earth’s, the only way home was to go around the moon and then return home: slamming on the brakes and reversing direction would have wasted too much kinetic energy. Thirteen: The Apollo Flight That Failed is a great book on the subject and ten film’s great too of course. Maybe it’s worth me pointing out at this point that in the Apollo missions, the three astronauts had job titles of Commander, Command Module Pilot (CMP) and Lunar Module Pilot (LMP). For those missions that landed on the moon, it was the Commander and LMP that got to land on the moon while the CMP remained in orbit.

Anyway, Jim’s second colour is amethyst. He’s not come out too bad. The likeness isn’t perfect but once again there’s something about the space suit that elevates this one. I’m having great fun with these.
