Fred Haise

Number eight in the collection is Fred Haise, Lunar Module Pilot in Apollo 13. The plan was for Fred to be the sixth man on the moon and to not be in this collection but things happened and…look, just watch the film, OK? Fred is still with us the grand old age of 92, the only living person on this planet to have visited the moon and not set foot on it.

Fred’s second colour is sky blue. ChatGPT likes this as it hints at the shortage of oxygen on Apollo 13. I just picked twelve portraits, worked out how I’d arrange them, then picked twelve colours and worked out how I’d arrange them. There was no matching of colours to individuals and their stories but ChatGPT keeps finding them and that’s fine by me.

It’s another great portrait. They’re all of a very similar standard; maybe Jack Swigert is slightly weaker. I’ve put body and soul into these portraits and I can feel it. They’re bringing out an emotional response.

I was planning on doing just the one portrait today but I think I have time for a second…
