I thought I'd have another go at turning an abstract underpainting into something recognisable. This…
Winter Roots
And for my second painting today, I thought I’d just throw everything on the paper and see what came out. Here’s what I ended up with.
I started with three watercolours: French ultramarine, transparent yellow and quinacridone magenta. There just went onto the paper fairly randomly, with overlapping bits providing some greens, oranges and purples. Then I put on my favourite inks: earth red, sap green, olive green, sepia and indigo. And I added some granulation fluid and just let gravity do its thing (with me tipping the paper around). I finished by adding some tree-like things at the top with sepia ink (direct from the pipettes in the bottle lid, not using a paintbrush) to go with the underground roots that had appeared on the paper. And I spattered on some titanium white.
None of it planned, all off the cuff. And I’m really pleased with how it turned out. It’s now framed and up for sale. Why are the best paintings always the ones that require the least effort?
