I thought I'd have another go at turning an abstract underpainting into something recognisable. Ā This…

Winter Roots
And for my second painting today, I thought I’d just throw everything on the paper and see what came out. Ā Here’s what I ended up with.
I started with three watercolours: French ultramarine, transparent yellow and quinacridone magenta. Ā There just went onto the paper fairly randomly, with overlapping bits providing some greens, oranges and purples. Ā Then I put on my favourite inks: earth red, sap green, olive green, sepia and indigo. And I added some granulation fluid and just let gravity do its thing (with me tipping the paper around). Ā I finished by adding some tree-like things at the top with sepia ink (direct from the pipettes in the bottle lid, not using a paintbrush) to go with the underground roots that had appeared on the paper. And I spattered on some titanium white.
None of it planned, all off the cuff. Ā And I’m really pleased with how it turned out. It’s now framed and up for sale. Ā Why are the best paintings always the ones that require the least effort?
