I’ve had a busy day dashing and splashing around the village. I just woke I…
View From Hartlip Church
And it’s another Hartlip landscape! This is the seventh and last of the Hartlip landscapes that I put together value plans for a while ago. If I want to do more, I need to prepare some more value plans. I have some photos ready for this, so that will just be a home job.
I fancied doing a sunset, as this view faces to the West. So colour choice was a no brainier: French ultramarine, quinacridone magenta and Indian yellow. These are my goto sunset colours. Burnt sienna is in there too but there are no other colours apart from that.
Composition-wise there are a few areas for improvement. That gravestone right in front of the tree could have been left out. The archway at the back is in quite a dark value. If the wall to the right of it was a similar value, that would have been better. And the tree behind that wall should have been in a lighter value.
Highlights for me are the bit of church with its deliberate run backs providing some interesting textures and the grass with its combination of French ultramarine, Indian yellow and burnt sienna making the sun shine on the grass without it looking garish. It’s a trio that I need to remember and use again. The sunset colours are good too. The purple tree vibrates against the yellow and orange behind it – this recently well trodden complementary scheme was something I only subconsciously created when I thought a sunset might look good behind the tree.
And that’s about it. This one sold quickly!
