Once Upon A Time In The West – In Progress

I shared a photo of today’s painting on Facebook before I filled in the silhouettes. Ā I was told I should stop there and frame it but I carried on instead. Ā But here’s a photo of that interim step. Ā I do like it, and it’s given me ideas for future paintings.

The only problem that this painting has that the final version doesnā€™t have are the legs on the guy at the back. Ā They’re too thin here, making it look as if he’s walking on stilts. Ā In the final version of the painting, I did widen them. One new thing I’ve noticed is the “triangular armature” within the photo. Ā You could draw one straight line through the gunmenā€™s right feet and the bottom of the cactus, then another line through the tops of the gunmen’s heads and the top of the cactus. Ā The straight lines would meet at a vanishing point near the edge of the painting. Ā This was also the case with the source shot, so I obviously spoke way too soon and Sergio Leone really does gave a great cinematic eye.

Obviously it’s too late to frame and sell this one.
