Once Upon A Time In The West – In Progress

I shared a photo of today’s painting on Facebook before I filled in the silhouettes.  I was told I should stop there and frame it but I carried on instead.  But here’s a photo of that interim step.  I do like it, and it’s given me ideas for future paintings.

The only problem that this painting has that the final version doesn’t have are the legs on the guy at the back.  They’re too thin here, making it look as if he’s walking on stilts.  In the final version of the painting, I did widen them. One new thing I’ve noticed is the “triangular armature” within the photo.  You could draw one straight line through the gunmen’s right feet and the bottom of the cactus, then another line through the tops of the gunmen’s heads and the top of the cactus.  The straight lines would meet at a vanishing point near the edge of the painting.  This was also the case with the source shot, so I obviously spoke way too soon and Sergio Leone really does gave a great cinematic eye.

Obviously it’s too late to frame and sell this one.
